About Goku (The Dragon Ball Manga Series) - Chapter 8

When Toriyama allowed Up the Super Saiyan conception during the Frieza bow, he felt the only way to show Goku's massive power-up was to have him transfigure. originally he was concerned that the facial expression looked like that of a villain, but felt it was respectable since the metamorphosis was brought about by wrathfulness.

The Super Saiyan form also spared the trouble of coloring Goku's hair all the time for the standard black and white manga runners. This was the reason for the Super Saiyan form having golden hair, because it was easier to draw for Toriyama's adjunct who spent a lot of time bartering in Goku's hair.

Goku's piercing eyes in Super Saiyan form were also inspired by Bruce Lee's paralyzing light. For the Dragon Ball Z anime adaption, character developer Tadayoshi Yamamuro also used Bruce Lee as a reference, stating that, when he "first becomes a Super Saiyan, his slanting disguise with that glooming look in his eyes is all Bruce Lee."
